Okay, so right now I've decided on SIM300 for the GSM and 18F6722 for PIC.

my friend said she's using EM406a for the gps. Will the three go well together

VioletRock

Yes they should be fine.
There are some starter ideas here
http://wiring.org.co/learning/libraries/basicpositioning.html

Since the GSM is controlled with AT commands, should I have to learn AT too?

VioletRock

Yes, it will help to have a good knowledge of AT commands for the SIM300
as they are not all the same.

I was reading the first few posts of this thread, and u guys mentioned that I have to have a static ip to be able to receive the position information from the gsm.
But what if I want to receive it from any computer I log on to?

VioletRock

The simplest way is to have a sever, that the GPS unit can sent its
position to, and you can access from anywhere.
 VioletRock like this.

Hey, it's kinda tough to find the sim300 here in Malaysia.
I was checking out ebay and I found this.
Could u guys check it out, is this the right one?
Just wanna make sure

Looks okay, and at a great price, but as I'm no expert you might
want to wait to see what others think

You will need some add-ons, such as an antenna and SIM holder.

Ahh I see.
Antenna for the gsm or the gps?
which models or brands do u suggest for the antenna & sim holder then?
Are there other add-ons I should know of?

VioletRock

Just the GSM, it is built into the GPS.

VioletRock

Any decent quality should do, depends on what is
available and the layout of your project.
Just be careful to get the right connector on the antenna to fit the modem
there are several sizes.

VioletRock

Well you will need the right connectors for the modem and GPS.
These are not common, again it depends on where you are.

Will you be making a PCB for your project ?

I'm not sure I know how. Is that easy to get or do I have to make a specific one on my own to suit my project?

Hi VioletRock,

I need little information from you,
What family of micrtocontroller is popular at malaysia (8051/PIC/AVR etc).
I mean colleges as well as small scale industries applications?

Because i may move to malaysia for embedded stuffs, it would help me much.

And for the PCB thing, If you are developing the code and everything, better to design PCB as well. Instead if u pick any PCB layout for this particular application from net or somewhere, its difficult to map ur idea with those PCB.

Hey eetech,

As far as I know, there're a lot of PICs here & they're easy to get.

Anyway, the thing is, I have no idea how to design a PCB.
As mentioned before, I'm EXTREMELY new to all this. I'm basically learning all this from scratch, so I hope you guys could guide me, and not assume I know most of the stuff you tell me. I know this is gonna be tough, but I'm willing to learn.

That's why, if u mention antennas for the GSM, I may need at least a few useful brand names I could search for, coz I wouldn't know the right one for my project.

I wanna be sure of one thing. Can the SIM300 be able to send live tracking information to computers in a form of a map display? Coz I was asking a friend about the AT commands, and he said gsm modems can only send out smses. I got a lil confused there.

eagle is a very popular nd easy to use pcb design tool....there are many tutorials available online like one above

I only have about 2 months to construct this project. I feel like, with my lack of knowledge on the basics of all these PCB designing, AT commands, etc. I might take way longer & I don't think I can risk it.

What do u guys think?
Do you have any suggestions on a simpler way of constructing a live gps tracker?
My friend will still be developing the gps receiver part. Is there any other way for my level of knowledge to be able to send the gps position information to any computer and see its movement on a map?

PLEASE I really hope u can help
I was actually really interested in learning the gsm modem way, but it's too time consuming for the time limit I'm given. So I'm forced to come up with another way. Looking forward to ur response & suggestions, ideas, etc.

Thanks
